Description

Masjid Quba (مسجد قباء) is located on the outskirts of Madinah, and is one of the oldest mosques in the world as it was built in the 7th century. It is considered to be one of the holiest sites for Muslims around the world after The Two Holy Mosques.

Importance in Islam

Quba Mosque has a significant place in Islamic history and is also mentioned in the Holy Quran as being the mosque that was built on ‘piety’. It was also where The Prophet Muhammad, Peace and Blessings of God Be Upon Him (PBUH) and his companion Abu Bakr (RA) first stayed after migrating to Madinah. Moreover it is believed that the first stones of the mosque were position by The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself when he came to Madinah.

Narrated Ibn Umar: “The Prophet (PBUH) used to go to the Mosque of Quba (sometimes) walking and sometimes riding.” Added Nafi (in another narration), “He then would offer two Rakat (in the Mosque of Quba).” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “He who purifies himself at his home and comes to Masjid Quba and offers two rakats therein, will be rewarded the reward of an Umrah (lesser pilgrimage).” [Sunan ibn Majah]

Architecture & Expansion

Since its construction, the mosque has undergone many renovations under the many caliphs, and later, the Saudi government itself. Made from white marble, the alabaster structure looks contemporary yet simple at the same time. The mosque is characterized by its six domes and four minarets.

There is a large praying hall that surrounds a central courtyard which is made up of black, white, and red marble. The courtyard has several entrances, among which the northern section is reserved as a women’s praying area. The mosque can accommodate more than 20 thousand worshippers at a time. It is now due to be extended again to a much larger size to accommodate more worshipers from around the world, Insha'Allah

The Quba Walkway Park

Masjid Quba is a 10-minute drive from Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. However, there is now a new purpose made walkway from near Al Masjid An Nabawi to Masjid Quba which takes approximately 40-45 minutes on foot. The starting point from the Al Masjid An Nabawi side is from the new Quba Walkway Park.

For any places of religious significance its always a 5 star rating. Masjid Quba is just 3 km from Masjid al Nabawi and can be reached in 10 mins by taxi (approximately 13 Riyal) or by electric buggy (10 riyal per person). Mashaallah Masjid is beautiful with elaborate facilities for ablution and Zamzam to drink inside the mosque. As we know it was the first mosque built by Prophet SAW after Hijrat to Medina. It is highly recommended to pray 2 rakah Nafil at this mosque. PS: Here also there are plenty of pigeons to feed.

Quba Mosque, the first mosque in Islam, was built-up by Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) in 622 AD, the year when he migrated from Makkah to Yathrib, an event considered by Muslims the start of the Islamic calendar. Accordingly, it is over 14 centuries old! The Quba Mosque (Arabic: مَسْجِد قُبَاء‎, romanized: Masjid Qubāʾ, Hejazi Arabic pronunciation: [mas.dʒɪd ɡʊ.ba]) is a mosque located in Medina, in the Hejazi region of Saudi Arabia, built in the lifetime of the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the 7th century C.E.[1][2][3] It is thought to be the first mosque in the world, built on the first day of Muhammad's emigration to Medina.[4][5] Its first stone is said to have been laid by the prophet, and the structure completed by his companions.[6] As per historical Islamic texts, Muhammad spent 14 days in this mosque praying qaṣr (Arabic: قَصْر, a short prayer) while waiting for Ali to arrive in Medina, after he stayed behind in Mecca to safeguard Muhammad's life and escape, by sleeping in Muhammad's bed in his place.[7] Performing Wuḍūʾ ('Ablution') in one's home, then offering two Rakaʿāt of Nafl (Optional) prayers in the Quba Mosque, is considered to be equal to performing one ʿUmrah. Muhammad used to go there, riding or on foot, every Saturday and offer a two rakaʿāt prayer. He advised others to do the same, saying, "Whoever makes ablutions at home and then goes and prays in the Mosque of Quba, he will have a reward like that of an 'Umrah."[8] This ḥadīth was reported by Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah and Hakim al-Nishaburi.[citation needed] Initially, the mosque was built 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) off Medina in the village of Quba, before Medina expanded to include this village
