Description

Masjid Al-Ghamama is one of the oldest mosques in Medina, Saudi Arabia, and is one of the historical relics of the city.

Importance in Islam

The mosque is believed to be located at the place where The Prophet, Peace & Blessings Of God Be Upon Him (PBUH) offered Eid prayers during the last four years of his life. It is also reported that he once offered Salatul-Istasqa at this point when the city of Medina was facing a shortage of rain. This gave the mosque its name ‘Ghamamah’, which means cloud. Some sources claim that this is also the place where the Prophet (PBUH) performed the funeral prayer of Najashi, the emperor of Aksum in Ethiopia.

Location and Structure

The mosque is located 500 meters west of Al Masjid An-Nabawi, and until recently, it remained closed for the daily prayers. The mosque has been opened now for worshippers who come and pray five times daily. An internal sound system has been fashioned in order to avoid the clash of sounds from Masjid an-Nabawi.

The mosque has a rectangular shape and is divided into two parts; the entrance door and the prayer room. The exterior of the mosque is surrounded by beautiful palm trees. The mosque retains much of its look from the Ottoman era when it was renovated the last time. Visitors will find the architecture of the mosque has a slightly traditional touch as compared to the other mosques in the area that have a more contemporary look. Pigeons are often seen flocking in the courtyard of the mosque, with the visitors feeding them. At night, as the mosque lights up, its beauty is enhanced with domes resembling shining orbs.

Masjid Al-Ghamamah is one of the oldest mosques in Medina, Saudi Arabia, located in the place believed to be where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed an Eid prayer in the year 631. The mosque is one of the historical relics of Medina. The mosque was built during the reign of the Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz between the hijri calendar of 86 to 93 and later by many Muslim rulers. Masjid Al Ghamāmah is located northwest of the Prophets Mosque. It took its name after the clouds shaded the Prophet ﷺ‎ while he was delivering his sermon. It was rebuilt at the time of the Ottoman Sultan, Abdul Majīd in the year 1275 A.H./ 1859 A.D which is preserved until now. The Mosque is of a rectangular shape built with Black Basalt stones and roofed with 11 domes. The domes and walls are white on the inside whereas the pillars and arcs are black which gives Masjid Al Ghamāmah a unique appearance.
