Description

Located in the capital city of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, the King Abdul Aziz historical center was built on the former compound of the Murabba Palace and is around 1.5 km to the north of the old city. In 1999 several cultural institutions focusing on Saudi history were built on the old palace compound and the remains of the old palaces were remodeled and restored to make it look as close to the original building as possible.

The Museum

The National Museum of Saudia Arabia is the Historical Center’s crowned jewel. It is famous for its magnificent architecture and eight “Exhibition Halls” each of which is themed around a different part of the region’s history, such as Saudi heritage, Islamic culture in Arabia, Arabian kingdoms, The Prophet’s Mission, and Islam in the Arabian Peninsula.

You can make your way through the museum hallway along the yellow-dotted path as you explore the exhibits with their well-lit, informative, and interactive displays.

Attractions

The King Abdulaziz Historical Center houses an old courtyard house, a mosque, a library, a conference building, and several parks with long, green fields and water showers. Towards the south lies a small theme park that attracts locals and tourists alike. There is also a group of traditional homes in the center that were originally planned as a part of the museum but are now used as reception centers that host major events and ceremonies.

For you to enjoy exploring the whole displays and/or exhibits in the museum, you need to have enough time to be able to appreciate each item or part of the museum. It is overwhelming because there is so much to see. For example you will be able to some land forms in saudi where you can Saudi Arabia is not just a dessert. You will also be able to have a good rewind of how people lived in the past in this side of the world. During our visit there was no entrance fee.

One of the best attractions in Saudi. It was a bit difficult to find due to the lack of road signs in English. With a little help from a few locals, we eventually found it. On arrival, there were a lot of free parking sports just outside the museum. It was free to go in. Unfortunately we couldn't take the guided tour as we were in a bit of hurry. We found the trip very educative as there was a lot of information about the history of the kingdom in different section. Its definitely worth a visit, would recommend a 1.5 - 2 hour time window at this location.

The bottom floor of this museum is splendidly organized from the oldest civilizations that lived in Saudi Arabia, up to the one just before the advent of Islam, complete with artifacts from each civilization, including re-creations of important hieroglyphics and ancient tombs, and some prehistoric skeletons. The top floor shows the history of Islam from its earliest days to the recent past. I always bring visitors to this museum as the one they must see in Riyadh.
