Description

Located in the capital city of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, the King Abdul Aziz historical center was built on the former compound of the Murabba Palace and is around 1.5 km to the north of the old city. In 1999 several cultural institutions focusing on Saudi history were built on the old palace compound and the remains of the old palaces were remodeled and restored to make it look as close to the original building as possible.

The Museum

The National Museum of Saudia Arabia is the Historical Center’s crowned jewel. It is famous for its magnificent architecture and eight “Exhibition Halls” each of which is themed around a different part of the region’s history, such as Saudi heritage, Islamic culture in Arabia, Arabian kingdoms, The Prophet’s Mission, and Islam in the Arabian Peninsula.

You can make your way through the museum hallway along the yellow-dotted path as you explore the exhibits with their well-lit, informative, and interactive displays.

Attractions

The King Abdulaziz Historical Center houses an old courtyard house, a mosque, a library, a conference building, and several parks with long, green fields and water showers. Towards the south lies a small theme park that attracts locals and tourists alike. There is also a group of traditional homes in the center that were originally planned as a part of the museum but are now used as reception centers that host major events and ceremonies.

A must see for all new comers to Saudi Arabia. The museum is divided in different sections for prehistory, Saudi Arabia before Islam and Islamic period. The artifacts shown are really interesting and don’t forget the building itself and the surroundings. Nice visit for the whole family.

Before I get in to it, quick facts. It's free It will take between 1.5-3hours. Really really really enjoyed this experience. As an englishman that loves history and museums, this place was better than expected. Much better. It's history starting from more than 10,000 years ago, and goes through the ages of a time when they were mammoths, neolithic period, Islam, ottomans and modern day arabia. Inclusive of great artefacts including original hyrogphics. The museum had a calming sense and I wish I could have had more time.

The National Museum is definitely worth a visit! A detailed journey through the past awaits you here! There are many exhibits and dioramas that bring you closer to life long ago! Explanations can be found everywhere in Arabic or English script. There are also many videos and interaction options in bilingual form that loosen up the visit. The free entrance and the non-existent waiting time complete this visit! After the visit, you can relax in the beautiful parks surrounding the museum and recharge your batteries to write your own story! If you liked this review, give it a thumbs up!

What an amazing museum! Loads of things to see and learn about the history of Saudi and also Islam. It was bigger than I was expecting so do allow between 1 - 2 hours. Plenty of staff to guide you around, looks like they hold varies events here too, we also went to see a jewellery exhibition from Paris. All of this was COMPLETELY FREE of charge! Would certainly recommend you visiting. Believe they also do guided tours there too.
