Description

Location and History

The Murabba Historical Palace, also known as the Qasr al Murabba, which means 'the square' in Arabic, is located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. To be exact, it is located two kilometers to the north of the old city of Riyadh, about half a mile away from the Masmak fort.

History

The palace is known to be the first building to be built outside the old city's walls and was initially built by King Abdulaziz, who is known as the founder of modern Saudi Arabia. The construction began in 1936 and came to an end in 1945. At the time of construction, the palace was built as a residential place for the king's family and his court. As of now, it is one of the museums of the city.

Landscape and Architecture

The building is made up of several palaces used for different purposes. The cubic building had it all, ranging from residential buildings and service facilities to diwan of the king and a vast and breezy courtyard surrounding the building. Around the courtyard is a brick wall, having a total of nine gates. As of now, the main gate is the one on the southern side, as it allows a very short link to the nearby mosque.

There are many attractions in the museum that attract tourists, some of the most popular of which are the personal belongings of King Abdulaziz and photographs from meetings he conducted with prominent people from all over the world.

The palace was built by King Abdulaziz outside Riyadh, being the first major expansion of the city in the twentieth century.  Construction was started in 1936, and completed in 1945. The Murabba palace is situated two kilometers north of the old city of Riyadh, and its total area was over 16 hectares.  It is located about half a mile from Masmak fort. The area where the palace was constructed was called Murabba Al Sufyan. In the south of the palace there are gardens, and the Batha valley is situated in the east.  Wadi Abu Rafie is in the west, and small hills lie on the north of the palace. Murabba Palace is very close to Al Shamsia mansion. In the 1950s the Murabba Palace was connected to Al Nasriyah Farm which is in fact a rural palace in the west of old Riyadh through a stone road.
