4.8Reviews

Description

Miqat mosque or Masjid Meeqat is located on the western side of Al-Aqeeq Valley. It is around 10 kilometers away from Masjid an-Nabawi.

Importance in Islam

Miqat mosque holds a special place because the Prophet (P.B.U.H) defined it as the miqat for the people of Medina. As pilgrims arrive for umrah or hajj, they stop by the mosque in order to enter into ihram and make the intention of performing umrah before they leave for Mecca. People inside Mecca, who have to perform umrah, travel to the mosque especially so they can enter into ihram.

History

The Miqat Mosque Complex was designed by the architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil. It was built between 80 and 90 A.H. when Umar bin Abdul Aziz was governor of Medina. After the initial construction, the mosque has been renovated several times. The latest renovation happened during the time of King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, who expanded the area in order to equip the mosque with the necessary facilities.

Structure

Built in the shape of a square, the mosque covers an area of 6000 m². There are two sets of galleries in the mosque that are separated by a yard. These galleries are shaped like arches ending with long domes. The minaret of the mosque is square at the bottom and round at the top, distinguishing it from other mosques in the area. A green central garden with lots of greenery and trees is located beside the mosque. There is a separate area for pilgrims where they can do ablution and change into ihrams. The mosque is located on the highway so that it is convenient for the pilgrims to reach it.

Masjid Quba is where they constructed the foundation for Islam's first Mosque, a Mosque mentioned in the Quran itself in verse 108 of Surah Tawbah. The Prophet (ﷺ) said “Whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to the mosque of Quba and prays in it, he will have a reward like the Umrah pilgrimage.” Mentions of Masjid Quba in Hadiths Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), on being asked about the significance of Masjid Quba, said, “He who purifies himself at his home and comes to Masjid Quba and offers two rakats therein, will be rewarded the reward of an Umrah (lesser pilgrimage).” [Sunan ibn Majah] “Never stand (to pray) there (referring to a place of worship in which the hypocrites had used for harm and disbelief, as mentioned in the previous ayah). A place of worship which was founded upon duty (to Allah) from the first day is more worthy that thou should stand (to pray) therein, wherein are men who love to purify themselves. Allah loves the purifiers.” [Holy Quran 9:108] In another instance, Al-Tabarani narrated that Al-Shimous Bint Al-Nauman said, “I saw the Prophet (PBUH) when he constructed this mosque. He used to carry stones and rocks on his back until it was bent. I also saw dust on his dress and belly. But when one of his companions would come to take the load off him, he would say no and ask the companion to go and carry a similar load instead.” Narrated Ibn Umar: “The Prophet (PBUH) used to go to the Mosque of Quba (sometimes) walking and sometimes riding.” Added Nafi (in another narration), “He then would offer two Rakat (in the Mosque of Quba).” [Sahih Al-Bukhari] Abdullah bin Dinar narrates that Ibn’ Umar (RA) said, “The Prophet (PBUH) used to go to the Mosque of Quba every Saturday (sometimes) walking and (sometimes) riding. He would then offer two Rakat.”

Dhul-Hulayfah Mosque, also known as Masjid al-Shajarah, is the designated miqat for those entering into the state of Ihram for Umrah or Hajj from Medina. It is situated about 9 kilometers from the city center of Medina. As an Umrah or Hajj pilgrim departing from Madinah, Dzul Khulaifa is one of the designated miqat points for you. It's the location where you should enter into the state of Ihram if you haven't already done so in Madinah. This is a necessary step before proceeding to perform Umrah or Hajj.
