Description

Location and History

Located in the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, Masjid Al Haram, also known as the Holy Mosque or Haram Mosque, is the largest mosque in the entire world and the eighth largest building in the world.

The term ‘Masjid Al Haram’ means ‘The Sacred Mosque’. It is named so because it surrounds the Kaaba, which is the most important and holiest shrine in the religion of Islam and also because Masjid Al Haram is the most important mosque in Islam and the site of pilgrimage for Muslims. It receives millions of worshippers from all over the world each year. As of now, the mosque is under the control of the King of Saudi Arabia.

Architecture

While Masjid Al Haram has undergone many renovations over the course of time, the oldest part of the structure dates back to the 16th century. The structure of the mosque consists of a rectangular courtyard in the center that is surrounded by covered prayer areas.

The courtyard houses two more sacred sites. One of these is Maqam-e-Ibrahim (station of Ibrahim) which is a stone with roots in Islamic tradition and history. The other is the oasis of Zamzam, which contains sacred spring water and has purportedly never dried since it was revealed.

To the north and east of the courtyard lie two small hills called al-Safa and al-Marwah, which are also part of the pilgrimage ritual of Muslims.

The total area of the mosque is about 356,000 square feet and it can hold up to 4 million people.

The place is amazing, beautiful at all times, under any weather. But some people not so much. Too much pushing near Kaaba, and guards become very mean near prayer times.

It was a beautiful experience and it was very peaceful to pray. My only complaint wouldn't be towards the place but the crowd. Crowding is normal here, but it would be amazing if there was some awareness for the men coming in contact women they don't know. They don't even try to avoid contact with women and that's a major problem. I understand accidental touches, but a lot of men kept prolonged contact and I had to put myself on either side of my father to get away.

Wonderful, ever since I went back to my country I miss being able to pray here. I wish I could come back here. But I recommend coming here 1 hour before if you wanted a place to sit.

24 years since I last visited this place. So much has changed yet the constant remains so beautiful and brings about so much peace in my heart. It is a sight you will never forget and always long for. May we all have a chance to pray within the boundary of the mosque.

Huge mosque with thousands of people praying there everyday. Very clean and comfortable prayer spaces. Women have amazing prayer spaces. The outside toilets are very clean. But be prepared to walk a lot. I mean A LOT. Pro Tip: There's a wudu space under the staircases and around gate 71/72 (inside). Best time to do Tawaf is around 8am and 3 pm. Be kind and respectful to others. Help strangers and consider different people have different culture. May Allah bless you and accept your prayers.
