Description

Riyadh National Zoo is one of the most popular and favorite tourist attractions for families in Riyadh. It was opened in the late 1980s, and its popularity has only increased since then. It is locally known as Malaz Zoo. The zoo has more than 1500 animals and 80 species of birds that have different geographic origins. The administration has tried its best to preserve the natural wildlife environment as these animals are seen wandering freely in their artificially created habitats. Riyadh Zone is also one of the zones featured in Riyadh Season.

Attractions and Facilities

The highlight of the zoo is the train ride. There are two mini kids’ trains that take the children for a 20 minutes train ride and give them a tour of the zoo. Inside the zoo, you will get to see panthers, lions, tigers, gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants, crocodiles, zebras, giraffes, flamingos, and many more animals. The zoo also has the famous Bengal tigers that are native to the Indian subcontinent. You will find the African houbara in the zoo as well, a bird that is almost extinct in Saudi Arabia.

There is a prayer hall, restaurants, cafes, ice-cream outlets, and toilets inside the vicinity for the visitors. It is a great educational trip for the children where they can learn about animals while watching them in real life. Just before the zoo closes, you can see two harbor seals demonstrating their talents to get hold of food from their trainer.

Zoo Timings

Visiting the zoo is better during winters as in summers the weather is too hot, and the animals prefer to stay out of sight in the shade. The zoo closes at Maghrib prayers during weekdays and remains closed on Sundays.

Honestly we enjoyed the experience so much, it was very well organized in matter of routes and explaining where to go and how to get where you need. The place was so massive it needs a few hours to explore all and to get to see every part of it, totally a place to visit when you are in riyadh and have a few hours to spare.

It’s a fantastic Zoo to take your kids. It’s not comparable to San Diego Zoo, but it’s really nice. There are a lot of places to eat and sit, so don’t worry about that. There are pretzels, pizza, sandwiches, ice cream, etc. You are able to feed certain animals with the kids for a cost. You and your family would enjoy this Zoo, I’ll definitely come back again.

Plan your Weekend in Riyadh Zoo with your Family

While I am living in Al-Malaz, I was use to go there, this was my kids favorite place to visit. Now Riyadh Zoo got a new look of Riyadh Season, which makes it more beautiful than ever.

Riyadh Zoo has been upgraded.... Especially during Riyadh season there are many activities and events added. For kids it is very exciting place to see the animals in real life. Great experience for them. Several types of animals are there and very well managed.

Well organised and very clean. All the animals are well fed and seem happy, except for a white lioness that looks very skinny. The cages are relatively safe. Everything was great except for six things : 1. Most of the shops only take cards no cash 2. Until yesterday there was no zebra, no turtles, and no hippopotamus ( eventhough they are listed in the map but their areas are empty ) 3. Feeding the animals is not well studied, and kids are meant to give food to the animals using a long iron stick which is dangerous for the animals especially the horses. Horses must only be fed by hand . 4. The farm area is very weak, it could be easily made bigger and must have more basic farm animals like sheep at least. 5. It is definitely missing a juice shop. 6. The glass is very dirty especially at the monkey and fox cages, which makes it a bit hard to see inside. The seal area is amazing. The entrance fee is very low , Under 3 years free entrance Kids 5 SAR Adults 10 SAR I highly recommended it , a great place to spend 3-4 hours with kids
