Description

Location and History

About one kilometer to the north of Al Masjid Al Haram lies the huge, walled cemetery known as Jannah al Mu’allah. The term “Jannah al Mu’alla” means ‘The Most Exalted Paradise’ and it is also known as the ‘Cemetery of Mu’alla’ or ‘Al Hajun’. This site is historically important to Muslims because this is the site where many of the ancestors and relatives of the Prophet Muhammad are buried.

Structure

Many domes and structures have been built over the known graves through the years. In 1925, many historic landmarks in the area were demolished by the Saudi King of the time, Ibn Saud, including this cemetery. Because of this, no original graves or tombstones have survived. The graves are now distinguished by small piles of rocks. Since there are no distinguishable tombstones, people now pay respects to the entire area in general. The site has free access all year long.

Prominent graves in Jannat al Mua’alla

Many people integral to the basis of Islam and close to the Prophet (PBUH) are buried here. Hazrat Aminah, Hazrat Khadija, Hazrat Qasim and Abdullah, Abdul Mutlib, and Abu Talib, the mother, wife, sons, grandfather, and uncle all lie in this blessed resting place, respectively.

Located near the Jin Mosque, the cemetery is declared as a no go zone for females. Many historical figures of pre & post Islamic Arabia are resting here!

Must visit as this is the resting place of Khadija RA, the first wife of Prophet SAW and many other companions. About 15 mins walk from haram. Better to go here by yourself walking rather than enroute a full ziyarah as this will allow you more time. Get a worker on site to help you identify some of the graves and then reward him with a little gift.
