Jabal Al Nour (Noor) - Mount of Revelation - Makkah

4.8Reviews

Description

Jabal Al Nour, also known as “Mountain of Light” or “Mountain of Enlightenment,” is located around 4 kilometers away from Masjid al-Haram towards the northeastern side of Makkah. It holds tremendous significance for Muslims and is a major attraction throughout the year for pilgrims who come to Makkah to perform the Hajj and Umrah.

Importance in Islam:

The first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) inside the cave of Hira at the summit of this hill. It is less than 4 meters in length and is only wide enough to fit five people. The Prophet used to climb the summit and spend time in the cave and meditate. According to Muslim belief, it was here that the angel Gabriel gave the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) his first revelation during the month of Ramadan in 610 C.E.

Features of the Mountain

One physical feature that differentiates Jabal Al Nour from other surrounding mountains and hills is its unusual summit, which makes it look as if two mountains are on top of each other. Stairs have been installed for the people to climb up; however, climbing the hill can be quite tough because it is extremely steep and takes almost two hours to climb. Still, you will find people of all ages climbing up to the mountain to visit the cave and pray in it. Due to its popularity, there is often a long line of people outside the cave, and you might have to wait for several hours for your turn.

Wow! Very tough climb all the way up and then a little down into the cave of Hira. Where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was blessed with the revelation of the Holy Qur'an.

It was not easy - would I do it again? Absolutely yes inshaAllah! I did it with my wife and two girls - it is doable. MashaAllah we all made it. The secret is to take it easy and slow and not rush. Rest enough - give your lungs enough oxygen in between. It would take anywhere between 90 and 120 minutes to get up (assuming you are not an athlete). The solitude and the views and the solemnity are of no comparison even today. I will end here and hope for you to experience as well.
