Arch (Rainbow) Rock - Al Ula

4.7Reviews

Description

People visiting Al Ula should consider planning a trip to the Arch (Rainbow) Rock. This rock is one of the most recognizable natural rock formations in the region and is also becoming a popular destination for astro-tourism.

Landscape and Activities

It is called Rainbow Rock because it looks like an arch or a rainbow with two clouds. Near the Rainbow Rock are other rock formations as well that tourists can visit such as the Dancing Rocks which are two large rock pillars that appear to be dancing together.

The entire region of Al’Ula has low light pollution, which makes Rainbow Rock an ideal spot for camping and stargazing. Visitors can also look for semi-precious desert diamonds that are often found on the site. These colorful quartz pieces are embedded in the rock as well as scattered all around it. It is also a remarkable place to visit for people who love to photograph landscapes.

Location

Rainbow Rock or The Arch is a sandstone arch that is 90 minutes away from the town of Al’Ula. The path towards the site in the desert is not well paved and a 4x4 is recommended to get there. The bumpy ride also makes it more suitable for tourists visiting in groups instead of families. The site is isolated with no facilities; hence a short day trip should be planned.

A unique rock formation that formed a bridge or arc shapes. One must have 4WD to reach the location. An additional experience while visitting Al Ula

Absolutely a must. The rock is spectacular, and though getting to it from the main road will require a 4wd (or at least a car with higher ground clearance) you're rewarded with a spectacular site. To get there, turn off the road before the big telecom pole and follow the rugged road. If you make it to the camel racing site you've gone too far (trust me, learned the hard way). We went in July so it was mad hot, but there is shade behind the rock (depending on the time of day), and if you're lucky like us you meet friendly locals who are great hosts. We also went at night and, despite the full moon (or maybe because of it) it was a very different place. Definitely drive the 45 mins outside of Al Ula. Worth every mile.

Could you advise where I can find a local driver to take me to off-road sites, such as rainbow rock, dancing rocks, Al Gharameel, etc.? Thank you!
