Absolutely a must. The rock is spectacular, and though getting to it from the main road will require a 4wd (or at least a car with higher ground clearance) you're rewarded with a spectacular site. To get there, turn off the road before the big telecom pole and follow the rugged road. If you make it to the camel racing site you've gone too far (trust me, learned the hard way).
We went in July so it was mad hot, but there is shade behind the rock (depending on the time of day), and if you're lucky like us you meet friendly locals who are great hosts.
We also went at night and, despite the full moon (or maybe because of it) it was a very different place.
Definitely drive the 45 mins outside of Al Ula. Worth every mile.
