Description

Situated about 200 kilometers northwest of Riyadh, near the town of Shagra, Ushaiger Heritage Village is one of the oldest villages in the region. The name ‘Ushaiger’, translates to ‘little blonde’ which comes from the nearby red mountain that stands tall, shadowing the yellow mud houses of the Ushaiger Heritage Village.

History and culture

Historically, the village has been a major stopping point for pilgrims coming from Kuwait because of its freshwater springs and because the clustered olive and palm trees in this region provide great shade. A museum established by the locals, called the Al Salem Museum, offers a glimpse into the heritage of the village with its famous weaponry, utensils, embroidered clothing, and jewelry.

The locals in Ushaiger Village are very hospitable and friendly and are usually always happy to help visitors. They have formed a small community that has developed its shops, mosques, and schools to cater to its needs. You should take a walk through the streets of this village to get a glimpse into the lives of the locals.

Divided into districts, some parts of the village even have renovated houses that provide a glimpse into the Najdi architecture with their carved wooden doors, triangular roofs, and beautiful windows. You can also drive up to the mountain road and enjoy a 360-degree view of the village from the top.

A very unique spot for a walk through history, beauty and simplicity. Ushaiqer is a standing ancient village that outlines the beauty of Najdi style and art. The heritage site is consisting of mud houses, marketplace, museum, and mosques which were built to withstands the toughest conditions of the desert. The village is surrounded by ancient farmlands and packed with houses in all sizes and styles placed between narrow alleyways that seems like an endless maze; tempting everyone to wander around its charming neighborhoods. The mud buildings reveals many historical aspects and clearly outshine the skills of its inhabitants who resourcefully developed their building techniques to deliver residential units capable of expressing their lifestyles. Walking down the village is a unique captivating experience which reveals precious historical information and conveys the invincible momentum of its inhabitants who manged to overcome the desert with their impressive civilization. Noteworthy, the local families voluntarily renovated the village on their personal expenses to preserve their culture and heritage. An efforts that deserve the ultimate recognition.
