Description

Matbouli House Museum is a privately owned property located on Al-Qossani Alley in Al-Balad District, Jeddah. This museum was a traditional Hijazi merchant’s home, which has since been converted into a museum. It is almost 400 years old and was designed in the urban architectural style when it was built.

Architecture and Design

The house belongs to a local wealthy family and has been minimally renovated to preserve the authenticity of the place. It has two entrances and four floors and features some stunning wooden-latticed balconies at the front. Inside the house, you will find old gramophones, classic stairwells, beautiful wooden ceilings, antiques, and local artifacts. There is also a bureau for senior guests and a basement that collects rainwater.

A visit to this museum will give an insight into what everyday life in Al Balad looked like back in the day. Unfortunately, some parts of the house, such as the rooftop, are still not open to visitors. However, there are plenty of other parts that are accessible that give you a thorough idea of the centuries-old culture.

Visiting the Museum

The house is unarguably one of the best historical attractions in the region when it comes to peeking into the traditional lifestyle of the ancient Arabs. Be sure to take a guide or a translator who can provide you with the history and importance of the house. With an entrance ticket costing ten riyals per person, this museum is worth a visit.

Nothing much to see from inside but different sets and colors of couches. But I appreciate the nostalgia of the house. You would have to pay 10 riyal.

It is a beautiful place. And it shows old life style. You can see how did they live there? And you can feel it. But some places blocked by the owner or security... Old owner of the house was one of the famous busines man in Saudi Arabia. Should visit...

Matbouli House Museum is a Top choice museum in Jeddah which have so many traditional houses closed in Al Balad, this privately owned museum in a beautiful three-storey property with stunning Hejazi mashrabiyya(wooden lattice balconies) is a real find. The home has been minimally refurbished to present rooms and decor that feel more authentic than what's found in some of the more polished examples. Old gramophones and telephones complement uneven floors, stairwells and beautiful wood ceilings. If there's a downside, it's that there's no access to the rooftop. It is a great pleasure to visit the museum house which reminds us about how the old business class people live in a close connection. Unfortunately these practices are now abandoned once for all.

Very nice museum in downtown jeddah. This old house belongs to a rish family and so it does reflect the life style of old families in jeddah. Highly recommended for visitors.

would be great if the rooftop was open, but the preservation of antiques and rooms is wonderful
