Description

Located on the west coast of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in Jeddah, King Fahad’s Fountain is so named because it was donated to the city of Jeddah by King Fahad. Constructed between 1980 to 1983 and opened to the public in 1985, King Fahad’s Fountain is the tallest of its kind in the world, with a maximum water height of 853 ft which is taller than the Eiffel Tower (without the antenna).

Design

Visible from across the city of Jeddah, King Fahad’s Fountain can eject a total of 16 tons of water in their air every day at a speed of 375 km/h. The fountain looks the best after nightfall when it is illuminated by over 500 lights built into the fountain's design. The water changes colors as it soars skywards against the night sky and makes for a mesmerizing sight that one has to see to believe.

Best time to visit

If you can get there just before sunset you can easily find a good vantage point because most tourists get there after sunset. Plus you will be able to enjoy the view of the setting sun, shining over the sea as tiny water droplets from the fountain caress your skin and create a relaxing and soothing effect.

Afterward, you can take a detour across the road to the Ritz Carlton Hotel street where food stalls, cafés, and restaurants serve some of the best coffee, sandwiches, and pastries in the city.

Fountain is great, problem is lack of information about operating hours. On 3rd day of our stay in Jeddah we finally got to see it. I know is Eid holiday, but would be nice some more information.

The fountain was donated to the city of Jeddah by King Fahd, hence its name. It was constructed between 1980 and 1983 and was launched in 1985.[2] Located on the west coast of Saudi Arabia, the fountain jets water to a maximum height, according to different sources, of either 260 metres (853 ft)[3][4][5]or 312 m (1,024 ft)[1] above the Red Sea. Whichever figure is considered the actual height for the fountain, it is the world's tallest. The second-tallest is the World Cup Fountain in Seoul, South Korea, with a water height of 202 m (663 ft). The fountain is visible throughout the vicinity of Jeddah. The water ejected can reach a speed of 375 km/h (233 mph) and its airborne mass can exceed 16 tonnes (18 short tons).[1] The fountain uses saltwater taken from the Red Sea instead of freshwater. Over 500 spotlights illuminate the fountain at night.
