Discover Jabal Ithlib - Archeological Site - Al Ula

4.7Reviews

Description

Located to the east of Al Ula, in the heart of Hegra, an archaeological site in Hejaz, Jabal Ithlib is a glorious, natural mountain and a cultural site. Historically, it was a place of worship for Nabateans who were ancient Arabian nomads from the Negev Desert.

Main attractions

The biggest attraction of Jabal Ithlib is the ‘Diwan’ which is a large room carved into the rocks of the mountain that looks like a dining area or a triclinium. It is historically believed to have been an important room for gatherings such as royal banquets and political meetings and also has an open front, which was probably designed for outside or public observers. Apart from that, the cultural roots and mind-blowing landscape of the mountains is what attracts tourists from all over the world.

The mountain can be accessed from a passage through the Siq canal which lies to the left of Diwan. Past this canal is the central area of the mountain that has many carvings and inscriptions that may have had something to do with ancient religious practices. There is also a water channel that flows through the center of the mountain range and leads into a natural water basin and eventually  into a cistern. It is another site from which we can learn the lessons of the past.

Nestled a few minutes drive from Al Ula old town is one of the regions most iconic natural rock formations… Jabal Al Fil or elephant rock. A perfect location to visit after sunset to unwind after a long day, you will be greeted by warm and welcoming Saudi hospitality, the restaurant or coffee shop both conveniently located on site offers great comfort food and drinks. The dug out pits located around the elephant rock offers very comfortable and private seating or one can opt for more of a social vibe seating under the rustic huts with bean bags. The venue is well laid out with proper and secure parking, signage and guides to assist. Toilet facilities are clean and conveniently located.

(Travel on Monday, January 23, 2023) Hegra Tour Stop 5-1: Giant Rock Tomb Jabal AlAhmar جبل الأحمر: Named after the red sandstone cliff with 18 ancient tombs. The on-site tour guide warned: Visitors should keep at least 3 meters away from the giant rock tomb, and are not allowed to enter the ancient tomb or climb the giant rock. There is a fee to visit the Hegra desert giant rock tomb area: about 2 hours, visit 5 attractions, each attraction has a commentator. Not open. Visitors can drive in by themselves. There are large buses that tour various scenic spots, and you can take them as you like according to the time you want to stay at each scenic spot. In addition to the driver, each bus also has on-board service personnel, providing small bottles of water, and paper guides and exploration manuals "HEGRA EXPLORER HANDBOOK: Look... Question... Share... Create" .
