Description

Madyan is an archeological site located in the northwestern Arabian Peninsula, in the region of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The place consists of houses that have been cut from huge rocks and can be dated back to 2000 BC. It is one of the few sites that are famous for the Prophets that were sent there. This particular place signifies the name of Prophet Shoaib Peace Be Upon Him.

Islamic History

Madyan is a place that has been mentioned in both the Quran and Torah multiple times. According to Muslim belief, this is the place where Prophet Shoaib was sent. The tribes that used to live here were also called ‘dwellers of the woods.’ They would commit robbery and were unfair in their business dealings. Prophet Shoaib brought the message of Allah and hoped to guide the people. However, they continued on with their ways and were ultimately destroyed by an earthquake. These empty houses and caves have been abandoned ever since.

Tourism

Car parking is available near the site, along with a museum with bathroom facilities. A signboard can be seen giving the necessary information regarding the place. The site can be easily accessed through a paved road. This abandoned city captures the ancient history that even predates the Islam of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and if you’re a history buff, you should definitely pay it a visit.

We arrived at 1 pm on week day, everything was closed. We and other 30 people were waiting for an hour for nothing. Almost nothing can be seen from the road. Another location nearby is the military base. There is no heritage, somebody messed up with the map.

Very dissapointed! We came the whole way from Jeddah to see this site and there was nobody during the opening time (Saturday 4pm-6pm). We waited for an hour together with another 5 cars and unfortunately we had to leave. This is not good for Saudi tourism business!! If there is a reason for closure, please update your opening time and put there a sign that it is closed.
