Asfan Fortress - Makkah Province

4.3Reviews

Description

Built in the 18th century, Asfan Fortress is located in the Asfan village, which is just a few kilometers north of Jeddah. The Ottoman army built it as a military outpost to monitor the road between Mecca and Medina.

Architecture

This 18th-century Ottoman fortress is situated on top of a small hill where its structure is preserved by the locals. Its placement is strategic, as it would have served as a good defensive position for warding off hostiles. It also houses ample storage for ammunition and has a great elevation for launching light artillery to the east. Plus, it is geographically protected by rocky hills on the left and complemented by excellent visibility to the right and has 12 circular structures along its walls for troops to climb.

Really cool ottoman fortress that’s mainly intact. It would have been better if there was some description of what the fort was used or anything about it’s history. The lack of historical data made it a bit underwhelming
