Located in the rocky northwest desert of Riyadh, the Edge of the world, also known as Jebel Fihrayn, is part of the Tuwaiq Escarpment. This geological wonder was formed by the tectonic movement of the Arabian plate and was dubbed as the “Edge of the world” because if you stand on top of it, you get a far reaching view of the horizon. This incredible view is also what has made this place a popular tourist spot.
From the top of the cliffs, you can also spot dry rivers, camels traveling across the deserts, and several hiking trails both on and around the cliffs. One of the most popular paths goes through a spot dubbed “the window” that will take you down to the lower plateau.
How to get there
The best way to get to the top is by taking an SUV. A tour guide is not mandatory; however, it is recommended because expertise in driving on dirt roads is rather important here. Even though there is a paved road that leads to this site, an everyday driver will have a hard time navigating their way through the dirt roads. Also, make sure that you stock up on plenty of food and water beforehand because it’s difficult to find supplies once you enter the desert and be very careful near to the cliff edge.
The cliffs rise 1,000 feet above the ground which means if you are starting from the bottom you will have to take a 15 to 20-minute hike to the top. As you make the ascent, you can see stunning wildlife and long stretches of the desertscape that will keep your energy up throughout the climb but remember to take plenty of water.
