Descripción

Situado en la playa de Uqair, a 70 km al noreste del oasis de Al-Hasa, el castillo de Aqeer es un antiguo fuerte de origen islámico en Arabia Saudita. Todavía se desconoce cuántos años tiene el fuerte. Algunas personas han relacionado el fuerte con la antigua ciudad de Gerrha, que fue mencionada en fuentes griegas y romanas.

Historia y Arquitectura

Se estima que el fuerte tiene al menos 300 años, y no está claro quién lo construyó, pero se sabe más popularmente que recibió al rey Abdul Aziz cuando vino a conquistar lo que ahora conocemos como Arabia Saudita. Dentro del castillo, pilares gigantes se encuentran en el patio a un lado, con pequeñas habitaciones construidas en el otro.

El fuerte está fortificado por una muralla de piedra rematada con ladrillos de barro. Tiene entradas arqueadas, grandes y estrechos ventanales de madera y suelos abovedados de piedra. También hay un mercado de la época otomana adyacente al fuerte, mientras que en el lado opuesto del fuerte hay restos de un antiguo puerto marítimo que se cree que es uno de los primeros puertos marítimos de la península arábiga.

Facing the beautiful uqiar beach you'll find this pretty old fort built by ottoman empire around 300 years ago! Its indeed a great archaeological site, with nice old fort with good architecture. Currently, its free entry but in 2 years time this space is getting a makeover with some developments like a lawn and a bit of renovation to bring in more history lovers. There's a Palace just beside this fort, which was used by a prince until few years back. This closed most of the time and the Asian caretakers of the fort (whom you will meet at the entrance mostly) will open it for 10 mins if you'd like to visit.

Easy to get to from khobar, the place has an old fort of islamic origin, and uqair was once connected to al hasa through streams and lakes. Uqair was once considered to be a strong candidate for the possible lost city of Gerrha. Its a good fishing spot, and photographer's will love the interior.

The fort is right next to an old abandoned port office and the whole place is next to the beach. You could come out here and have a lool and spend the rest of the day at the beach. The place isn't too old but definitely has historical value, some of the architecture is pretty cool. Specially if you know the history of the region and how it's related to a completely different city. It's not the most exciting of places and you will probably be done exploring in an hour at best. But we loved it, it's easy to get to and very accessible.
