The Fort was closed for the day, but we got access with the kindness of a local historian. The four era layers of the fort are astounding, dating back to a Phoenician temple whose large foundational blocks are still present. The round towers are distinctive and impressive. I had visited this site back in 1965 when the water table was higher, and the site was not built up with surrounding buildings. What was the main pool outside the fort is now enclosed within a women’s hammam (bathhouse). There is no interior to the fort that can be visited, but one gets a grand sense of what the fort once was by walking around the ruins. One section of walls has a still-visible communication system by which one could talk into any of many wall vents that are interconnected within the walls and have the sound emerge on down the line, like an old ship’s tube communication system.
