Tayma Fort - Tabuk Province

4.2Reviews

Description

Tayma Fort is situated in Tayma, which is a large oasis that has a long history of settlements. It is located in northwestern Saudi Arabia near Medina and Tabuk. The forts in Tayma are among the oldest settlements in Saudi Arabia and perhaps in the entire Arabian Peninsula. The Babylonian king, Nabonidus, also took residence in Tayma in the mid-6th century BCE. Moreover, it is one of the few places in Saudi Arabia that have been mentioned in the Mesopotamian texts.

Landscape

The Tayma Fort is an ancient archeological site that dates at least 1,000 years back and has a massive defensive wall made from stone and flour that protected it from enemy attacks. The terrain around the fort can be tricky as it is a mix of rocks and soft sand. Therefore, visitors should plan their trips on a 4x4 vehicle.

Attractions

If you are visiting the Tayma Fort, you will also discover other sights to explore in the area. Among these attractions is the Tayma Museum that provides explanations about the history and geological context of the Tayma forts. There are plenty of natural wells in the region as well, which served as the prime reason for the settlers to settle here. This fort is an incredible place to visit if you want to learn more about Saudi Arabia’s culture.

Saudi are definitely gearing up for tourists and they have started getting things ready. This site has huge potential in this respect. They could do with some plaques in a couple of languages explaining what and how the well worked and when it was used.
