Description

The Qasab Salt Flats are located in Shaqra Governorate and are the largest salt flats in Najd and one of the largest in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They are the primary source of salt in Saudi Arabia and have become a popular tourist destination where visitors can learn about natural salt extraction and processing.

Background and Landscape

Al-Qasab is an ancient city that has been famous ever since the pre-Islamic era for its salt and wheat production. The city is located 160 km away from Riyadh and is also known for its poets.

The Al Qasab Salt Flats make for an interesting site to visit as you can witness the production of raw salt from flat expanses of ground covered with salt. It produces about 200,000 tons of salt annually and has been famous since ancient times for its high-quality salt and is still sold in plastic packets throughout the Kingdom.

Towards the west of the salt flats, the land is bordered by the massive sand dunes of Ad Dahna Desert. The Qasab Salt Flats are just above an hour’s drive from the capital city, so you can easily plan a day trip here if you are in Riyadh.

A salt making plant in middle of nowhere, it is just in middle of the dessert far far away from sea. Seems to be that the sand there has way much salt mix. So they have made beds and poured water and the rest to nature, the water dissolves the salt leaving behind sand. In photos it looks like snow land We went there in winter, started around 9.30am from Riyadh, reached there by 12pm, in was very windy, nobody around, just took pictures, spend 15mins time and reached back to Riyadh by 4.30pm We didn’t find any good family restaurants nearby, we had lunch after coming back to Riyadh. The only thing is it is way long drive just for 15mins But for me it was worth it. Better than doing nothing over weekend

Salt mines in the middle of the desert!! Just amazing and awesome place to visit and should be in your wish list among other places you need to see. I bought rock salts in the local bakala neighborhood few years back and I did not realized it comes from this place. Al Qasab salt flats! Someone should explain this how is this possible. They said there is no saltwater here. Merely pouring water generates the salt process. I am not a man of science but this place simple amazed me!
