Description

Masjid ShuhadaUhud is a famous mosque located just a 10-minute drive from Al Masjid Nabawi in Medina. This mosque holds a sacred place in Islam and attracts many visitors every year.

Islamic history

The Mosque is considered a vital historic landmark by Muslims as this is where a very major battle in Islam, the battle of Uhud, took place. Followers of The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) who fought with him in the battle of Uhud are buried beside the mosque. Among them is Hazrat Ḥamzahibn Abd al-Muṭṭalib, who was a companion and a dear uncle of the Prophet. He is buried near Mount Uhud in the Uhad Martyrs Cemetery.

Pilgrims come to pay their respects to the martyrs, especially during the month of Ramadan. Standing at the famous Archer’s hill, Muslims experience a spiritual awakening and can go back in time, imagining the battle happening in front of them.

Layout

Made up of white stones, this mosque has one dome and two minarets. From the south, the mosque is partially hidden by the Jabal Ramah, while Mount Uhud can clearly be seen behind the mosque.

A blend of traditional and modern architecture, Masjid Shuhada Uhud is the largest mosque in the city after Masjid anNabawi. It can hold up to 15,000 worshippers at a time. At night, the white mosque seems to be emanating light from its alabaster structure. Seven smaller mosques are also located in the vicinity.

Facilities

The mosque has an administrative block that has wudhu stations installed for the pilgrims with special facilities for people with disabilities. There is a small market near the mosque which is famous for its carpets and dates. People visiting the mosque should try the fresh dates that are sold at a cheaper price after Asar Prayer.

Alhamdulillah it with due grace of the Al-Mighty Allah Ta'ala that He the Most-Merciful reached us to this blessed place. This very Masjid is also situated amongst side the graves of the Sahabah e Kiraam who passed away during the Battle of Uhud. Also at this site, the mountain wherein the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his blessed tribe were on top of during the Battle of Uhud. All places are very sacred and one should know the history of Islam.

The Sayed Al-Shuhada Mosque is an important site in Islamic history as it tells the story of the Battle of Uhud, which took place during the third Hijri year. It is also located next to the cemetery of 70 martyrs of Prophet Muhammad’s companions, about three kilometers away from the northern square of the Prophet’s Mosque. The mosque was completed in April of 2017 and features a unique architectural style. It covers an area of 54,000 square meters and can accommodate up to 15,000 worshippers. Supporting services and facilities can be found outside the site. The mosque faces Mount Rumat, a small hill located to the west of Mount Uhud. The Uhud Martyr’s Square, along with the landmarks it contains, can be seen from the top of the hill. Historical sources say that the army of the Quraysh tribe and its allies went to Madinah to kill Muslims and avenge those who died in the Battle of Badr, which took place in the second Hijri year. Muslims confronted them, with the Prophet Muhammad deploying archers on Mount Rumat. He ordered the archers to stay in their posts unless told to move. When the attackers began to flee, the archers thought the battle was over and that they had won. They came down the mountain, disregarding the Prophet Muhammad’s order.
