Description

Masjid ShuhadaUhud is a famous mosque located just a 10-minute drive from Al Masjid Nabawi in Medina. This mosque holds a sacred place in Islam and attracts many visitors every year.

Islamic history

The Mosque is considered a vital historic landmark by Muslims as this is where a very major battle in Islam, the battle of Uhud, took place. Followers of The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) who fought with him in the battle of Uhud are buried beside the mosque. Among them is Hazrat Ḥamzahibn Abd al-Muṭṭalib, who was a companion and a dear uncle of the Prophet. He is buried near Mount Uhud in the Uhad Martyrs Cemetery.

Pilgrims come to pay their respects to the martyrs, especially during the month of Ramadan. Standing at the famous Archer’s hill, Muslims experience a spiritual awakening and can go back in time, imagining the battle happening in front of them.

Layout

Made up of white stones, this mosque has one dome and two minarets. From the south, the mosque is partially hidden by the Jabal Ramah, while Mount Uhud can clearly be seen behind the mosque.

A blend of traditional and modern architecture, Masjid Shuhada Uhud is the largest mosque in the city after Masjid anNabawi. It can hold up to 15,000 worshippers at a time. At night, the white mosque seems to be emanating light from its alabaster structure. Seven smaller mosques are also located in the vicinity.

Facilities

The mosque has an administrative block that has wudhu stations installed for the pilgrims with special facilities for people with disabilities. There is a small market near the mosque which is famous for its carpets and dates. People visiting the mosque should try the fresh dates that are sold at a cheaper price after Asar Prayer.

This succeeded an earlier Ottoman era mosque. It is the site where Prophet Mohammed took part in one of the most important battles in Islamic history, the battle of Uhud. The site also houses a cemetery where the bodies of 70 of the Prophet's followers were buried following the battle.

The Battle of Uhud was a major engagement between early Muslims and the Quraysh during the Muslim-Quraysh War. The battle was fought in a valley north of Mount Uhud near Medina on Saturday, 23 March 625 AD (7 Shawwal, 3 AH),[10][11] Battle of Uhud Part of the Muslim–Quraysh War Muhammad and the Muslim Army at the Battle of Uhud[1] Date 23 March 625 (7 Shawwal, AH 3 (in the ancient (intercalated) Arabic calendar) Location Valley by Mount Uhud, north of Medina, Arabia 24°30′N 39°37′E Result Quraysh victory[2][3] Belligerents Muslims of Medina Quraysh of Mecca Commanders and leaders Muhammad (WIA) Ali ibn Abi Talib Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib † Abdullah ibn Jubayr † [4] Mundhir ibn Amr [4] Zubayr ibn al-Awam Abd-Allah ibn Ubayy (Defected) [4] 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit[5] Abu Sufyan Hind bint Utbah Ikrimah bin Abu Jahl Amr ibn al-As Khalid ibn al-Walid Strength 754 total 700 Infantry[a] 50 archers 4 cavalry 3,200 total[8] 3,000 infantry 3,000 camels 200 cavalry Casualties and losses 62[9]–75 killed 22[9]–35 killed Battle of Uhud is located in Saudi ArabiaBattle of Uhud Location within Saudi Arabia After suffering defeat at the Battle of Badr and having their caravans endlessly attacked and plundered by Muhammad's side, the Quraysh finally saw the necessity to take strong measures. Their chief, Abu Sufyan, then set out for Medina with 3,000 troops to confront Muhammad.[12] The early phase of the fighting saw the Muslims gaining the initiative. The Quraysh vanguard began faltering and retreated, leaving their camps vulnerable. However when Muslim victory seemed near, the Muslim rear guard who were tasked to defend a hill to protect against a possible encirclement, abandoned their positions to collect spoils of war left by the fleeing enemy. This turn of events was exploited by the Quraysh general Khalid ibn al-Walid who launched a daring cavalry strike in the undefended rear and encircled the Muslims, thus turning the tide of battle. The battle was seen as a significant setback for the Muslims and a minor victory for the Quraysh as they would return with an even larger force in the Battle of the Trench.
