Description

King Fahd Causeway (Jisr al-Malik Fahd) is a series of bridges that are 15 miles long and connect Saudi Arabia and Bahrain across the Persian Gulf. The idea to build this bridge was conceived during the 1950s to improve links along with social and cultural ties between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Construction of the bridge was completed in 1986.

Structure and Landscape

The five bridges of this causeway rest on more than 500 concrete pylons. The causeway looks futuristic with its seven embankments in the shallow water of the Gulf. One of these embankments is called Middle Island or Passport Island, which is also the largest of them all. It has been converted into an artificial island with customs and immigration facilities, a mosque, gardens, and restaurants. This island also has a border station that has a McDonald’s outlet on each side.

Traveling through the Causeway

Due to COVID-19, the bridge was closed down temporarily in March 2020 for public safety. However, it was reopened on 17th May 2021; people have to follow strict protocols in order to travel on this bridge.

Driving through the causeway is a great way to travel to Bahrain or Saudi Arabia from either one of the countries, especially during sunset and sunrise. The bridge provides the experience of traveling through the sea without having to board a ship or going through any dreadful seasickness.

I had been here in the year 1998, two times. Lots of good memories in this place. I hope until now it doesnt change the beauty of this place. Most Filipinos had been here if you are within the vicinity of Eastern provice of Saudi Arabia.

I recently travelled. The facilities and staff at Saudi side are very good and efficient, how ever the border staff at Bahrain side specially at bahrain exit for KSA are very arrogant and non cooperative. So i want to ask if some Bahraini authority is listening that the country that are having tourism as their one of mainstream economic source, they should remove all arrogant people from immigration counters.

This bridge is one of the brilliant masterpiece built in 1986 , and the name was kept as a token of respect in name of King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz (then) by then prime minister of bahrain Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. The bridge is called KING FAHAD CAUSEWAY. The Border Station was designed as two connected islands, with the west side designated as Saudi Arabian and the east as Bahraini. The Toll fees is Sar: 25/- as of 2023. Car insurance at Bahrain is around Sar: 42/-. we cant stop or park the var in between the borders. The best part is knowing that you are driving over a Deep ocean. The Dark color of water and the waves ? around the bridge gives some really beautiful and amazing views around.
