Description

Khaybar Historical City is an oasis and a historical landmark in Saudi Arabia. It is situated 153 kilometers north of the city of Medina. Before the rise of Islam in the 7th century, the area was inhabited by Arabian Jewish tribes. In 628 AD, Muslims under the leadership of Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him (PBUH) took over the city during the Battle of Khaybar.

History and Landscape

Khaybar is known for growing dates and also has a number of freshwater wells. The city was inhabited until 1401 Hijri. However, due to the recurring floods and uneven terrain, the condition of buildings had grown weaker with time.

The Government built the new Khaybar City nearby on flat land and offered accommodation to the inhabitants of the old city there. Today, the old city consists of houses that are in ruins as decades and centuries have passed since it was abandoned by its inhabitants. These houses were built with stones and mud bricks. It is also home to the famous Khaybar Fort that stands on a hilltop nearby.

Visiting the Khaybar City

Tourists are not allowed to go deep into the city, but they can still see the remains from a distance. However, the city has been closed down recently due to ongoing maintenance, so make sure that you don’t visit on a day when it is closed for tourists.

It is an important and strategic point for Islam history. The Khayber Battle plays a big role in the development of Islam. The heritage site is amazing.

Love this location, the wadi and the different small villages or house groups. Totally recommendable as a day excursion from Medina!
