Description

Located in the historic At-Turaif district on the outskirts of the capital city Riyadh, The Diriyah Museum transforms the 18th century ruins of At-Turaif into an open air museum. At-Turaif was the birthplace of the first saudi state and was the original seat of power for the Al-Saud family. It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2010 and has been undergoing a long restoration process ever since to bring back the historical legacy of the city.

Historical value

The museum uses artifacts, handicrafts, and tools to showcase the history of the ruling family and the kingdom’s heritage, and tells a story about the history and development of Diriyah. A walk through this museum and the district's streets provides an insight into what the earliest Saudi state looked like and how the ruling family used to live.

Architecture

At night time, the area past the gateway is illuminated by different colored lights that combine with the newly built protective walls to give this historical place a more modern look. The museum also uses projectors, screens, and modern lighting to make it easier for the visitor to navigate their way through the mud walls of the ancient city. The museum also has a traditional market that is home to handicrafts and souvenirs dedicated to the culture of Old Diriyah.

The At-Turaif World Heritage Site is located opposite the Bujairi district which is home to The Bujairi Heritage Park and the newly opened Al Bujairi Terrace which is a world class premium dining destination which overlooks the historic At-Turaif district in Diriyah. You can check out our Restaurants in Bujairi Terrace page to get a video tour of the best restaurants.

Diriyah Fort, very organized and clean. It’s great place to learn about Saudi Arabia history. The only drawback is there are expensive cafes only, no economical shops to buy snacks or water.

An amazing experience at the Diriyah historic fort. Everything is clean, organised. The Saudi history is exhibited, the lights at night, the soft music, the nature, the exquisite traditional items and costumes. I was truly amazed a mesmerising beauty which gives sense of peace, power and ancient times in a modernised way.

Genuinely incredible place. A great place to learn about Saudi Arabia's history. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-visit. I went on a weekday in May 2023 and it was basically empty. I'd really recommend checking this out ASAP, it's only going to get busier as more tourists visit the city.
