Asfar (Yellow) Lake - Eastern Province

4.2Reviews

Description

Al-Asfar Lake, also known as the yellow lake, is a shallow lake in the wetlands located in Eastern Saudi Arabia. The lake is a spectacular sight surrounded by sand dunes which makes it one of a kind.

Landscape

This lake is surrounded by sand dunes, greenery and the flowing water makes it look like a view from a postcard. The area has become a habitat for many birds and animals. During the breeding season, winter birds come to the lake, providing a worthy sight.

Although reaching the top of the sand dunes can be challenging, the view from up there is serene and breathtaking. For people who want the experience of a desert ride in winter, a trip to this lake would be perfect. The lake can also prove to be an ideal place for camping or stargazing but visitors must come prepared because of lack of facilities in the area.

What You Should Know While Planning a Trip

The lake lies 130 km from Dharhan, and a 4x4 vehicle is recommended to reach the lake. It would be better to stick to the tracks that have been set up already as the roads can get tricky. Unless you have provisions to stay the night, day trips should not extend after too long after dark as it is secluded and travelling at night is not recommended. It is advisable to hire a tour guide to reach the lake safely.

Yellow Lake is a stunning natural beauty in the middle of the desert. It's not easy to reach as there are no proper roads or Google Maps directions. You must follow landmarks to find it. A sedan car can take you to the valley, but a 4x4 vehicle is required to drive on the desert. Winter is the best time to visit, and arriving before 3 PM lets you enjoy a yellow-hued landscape caused by the bright sunlight on the dunes and water. Carry enough water as amenities are limited, and mobile network is weak. Leave before dark to avoid any trouble reaching the highway. It's an unforgettable experience..

Nice and relaxing view. Good for group travel trip. Road is a little bit bumpy but accessible even with small cars. Just drive slowly and you could reach the lake. GPS is still not yet available up to the lake. Just follow the trail and remember the it so you could find your way back.
